new study in the European Journal of Nutrition shows that oral glutathione supplements are available to the body and have a positive immune benefit. Great news after all the talk about glutathione being broken down in the gut and not available. This study shows that this is not entirely true. It is nice to see the research published!

Randomized controlled trial of oral glutathione supplementation on body stores of glutathione.

About the Study:
·         Trial measured effect of glutathione supplementation at 250 mg/day and 1000 mg/day on glutathione levels in different blood components and exfoliated buccal mucosal cells over a six month period.1
·         Subjects were 54 healthy adults (41 females/13 males), 28-72 years of age (mean=46.6 years).1
·         Results of the study showed glutathione levels in the blood increased after one, three and six months vs. baseline at both doses.1
·         At six months, mean glutathione levels increased 30-35 percent in erythrocytes, plasma, and lymphocytes, and 260 percent in buccal cells in the high dose group (P<0 .05="" color="#222222" font="">
·         Glutathione levels increased 17 and 29 percent in blood and erythrocytes, respectively, in the low dose group (P<0 .05="" sup="">1
·         A reduction in oxidative stress in both glutathione dose groups was indicated by decreases in the oxidized to reduced glutathione ratio in whole blood after 6 months.1

·         According to the study, the effects of glutathione supplementation on the levels of the glutathione precursor cysteine in plasma and the activity of the rate-limiting glutathione biosynthetic enzyme GCL in erythrocytes were examined after the six-month study period.1 No changes were observed in cyst(e)ine concentrations or GCL activity in any of the groups.1

2012 Tri-Season

Winter is officially here in Michigan! It's too cold on most days to run or bike outside, so it is off to the gym for a full workout in preparation for the 2012 Tri-Season. I've picked out several races this year and hope that I can effectively train for all of them. The Warrior Race is a new race for me and I'm excited to add this for additional variety!

Beauty and Brains- Really?

Beauty and Brains- Really?

Is there anything sexier than a beautiful face with some serious smarts? You have all seen the commercials - the geeky scientist meets the beautiful supermodel and they create this beautiful and amazing talented child. Does this really happen, can this really happen?

What if there was a product for both beauty and brains that improved the look of your skin, hair and nails, but also could have an impact on your ability to focus, concentrate and improve the way you think or get things done? I’ve focused on an ingredient that does affect beauty and has the ability to influence the health of your brain. So, let’s be clear - some ingredients do not just cover one area, but can cross over and have positive effects on multiple areas of one’s body.

Cognizin® is a multifaceted approach to dealing with both one’s beauty (skin health) and one’s brain (mental focus). Cognizin provides the nutrient choline that is an important nutrient for healthy skin, hair and nails. Try it - you’ll notice this visible effect on your hair, skin and nails. The other, considered the “working” part of Cognizin is a nutrient called cytidine. Cytidine is a pyrimidine an important molecule in the formation of RNA and DNA -the genetic material found in every cell of your body. Cytidine also increases energy (ATP) in your brain, helping you focus, concentrate and generally get work done. The mental effect provided by Cognizin might not be so visually apparent, but might be seen by others close to you that notice that you are acting or doing things differently.

A good friend of mine starting taking Cognizin a few days ago and suddenly sent me a message saying that “it feels like I now have Spidey Senses”. Her hearing, sense of focus, and mental sharpness are on the alert and she is truly feeling the mental effects of Cognizin.

So, beauty and brains can come together and create something truly amazing.

Five tips for the 5th of July

So many of us stayed up late on the 4th of July and had more to eat or drink than usual as we socialized with family and friends waiting for the fireworks to begin.

Here are a few tips for getting back to your pre-holiday routine:

Exercise - for at least one hour.
Protein - eat 3 oz of protein (meat, chicken, eggs, fish) with every meal.
Fruits and Vegetables - include 5 fruits or vegetables with your meals and snacks.
Water - drink an extra glass of water when you wake up and before going to bed.
Hugs - are important too and help you reconnect with friends and family.

These simple five tips will get your blood pumping, burn extra calories, keep you full longer, hydrated and help you reduce stress for the upcoming work week.

Cheers!
